War of 1812 Muster in Greenfield Village
August 18-19, 2012
The Porches & Parlors Historic District of Greenfield Village will come alive with citizen soldiers, craftsmen, merchants and a host of ladies and gentlemen all representing the era encompassing the War of 1812. These typical militia musters from the 1811-1815 periods became important occasions in the life of the Early Republic, and took place in almost every populated town and city across the nation, and its territories. These events frequently involved the entire community, and included trade, politics, and social events for men, women, and children of all ages.

The War of 1812 is somewhat of a forgotten war, but it was extremely important in the history of our country. The conflict was the first true test of the United States of America — not just on a military level, but in foreign affairs, domestic issues of commerce and trade, diplomacy, powers of the executive branch and much more. It tested the Constitution and all that was embodied in its democratic ideals of checks and balances and separate branches of government. The War of 1812 is also noteworthy for bringing the only major invasion of the United States.

The War of 1812 Muster in Greenfield Village will offer an up-close opportunity to learn more about these citizen soldiers of the local militias, the men who were considered the bulk-work of the nation’s defense rather than a small standing army during this crucial period of American history.
