Ragtime Street Fair
July 24-25, 2010 (Open Saturday 'til 9pm)
Come Dance, Enjoy and Celebrate Ragtime
Come dance, enjoy and celebrate Ragtime in Greenfield Village all weekend long. Our popular new signature event focuses on the early "jazz age" of 20th-century America’s first decades. The unique, ragged rhythms of this hugely popular genre present the background for two days of dancing, music, drama, parades and fantastic food. Ragtime Street Fair is free to members and free with Greenfield Village admission.
   
2009 activities
A weekend-long celebration of the Ragtime era of the early 20th century.

Dance demo & instruction: Learn to dance some ragtime era steps, then watch a professional duo dance some of the more intricate steps.

Ragtime food vendors: Wonderful foods of the era from regional farmers and producers prepared fresh, as you watch, by The Henry Ford chefs.

Ragtime piano: Listen to accomplished ragtime pianists celebrate the glory days of ragtime. Performances by Taslimah Bey (both days), "Perfessor" Bill Edwards (both days), Nan Bostick (both days), John Remmers (both days), Jon Milan (Sunday), and Jerry Perrine (both days).

Performances by: River Raisin Ragtime Revue (Sat. evening & Sun. afternoon), Tartarsauce Traditional Jazz Band (both days, plus Sat. evening) and Mike Montgomery & Friends (Sun. afternoon).

Detroit’s Ragtime Legacy: Don’t miss this fascinating multi-media program presented by Nan Bostick, one of the nation’s leading ragtime experts.

Jon Milan’s Ragtime and the Jazz Age: Performance, presentation, and book signing (Sunday only)

"Simply Gershwin": Celebrate the beloved music of George Gershwin in this lively 30-minute revue packed with great music and humor.

Phonograph and player piano demonstrations

Silent film: "Lizzies of the Field" -- Don't miss this classic Mack Sennett slapstick comedy with live piano accompaniment.

Song Plugger: Meet Nan Bostick, ragtime historian and our ragtime song plugger who will perform some of the biggest hits of the early 20th century.

Piano Cutting Contest: Pianists show off their talent in a high-energy musical contest (Saturday only).

Cake Walk: Join in on the fun of this once popular fair activity. You might even take the cake!

Saturday evening includes:
  • River Raisin Ragtime Revue concert at 7pm
  • Dixieland Jazz Parade: Ragtime's end and the birth of jazz will be acknowledged by this Dixieland-style parade around the Village Green and down Main Street led by the Tartarsauce Traditional Jazz Band.

what to bring, what to wear
Greenfield Village is spread over dozens of acres-- comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes are a must. A large portion of activities are held outdoors, rain or shine. Dressing for the weather is a must. Bring umbrellas / rain gear and prepare for a wide range of temperatures, especially if you will be staying into Saturday evening. Folding chairs are also recommended for those who cannot stand for long periods.

Wheelchairs are available for a small fee at the Village entrance. Electric scooters are also available for a fee, but only in limited supply. Wheelchairs and scooters are rented on a first come, first served basis-- plan to arrive early if you need to rent them. You are welcome to bring your own wheelchair or scooter, however, upright scooters (Segways) are not allowed on premises.

Children's wagons are also available to rent for a fee at the Village entrance. You are welcome to bring your own stroller or wagon, however, recreational scooters, bicycles or in-line / in-sole skates are not allowed inside the Village gates.

Bring a camera; photography is allowed in all areas of the Village.

Tickets to Greenfield Village are available online, through The Henry Ford Call Center (open 7 days a week, 9am - 5pm) 313-982-6001 and at all admissions counters. Tickets can be mailed when reservations are made 2 weeks or more in advance. Tickets purchased less than 2 weeks out will be held at Village Will Call.

The Henry Ford is located in Dearborn, Michigan on the corner of Village Road and Oakwood Boulevard, just west of the Southfield Freeway (M-39) and south of Michigan Avenue (US-12).

From the East or West via I-94:
Take I-94 to the Oakwood Blvd exit; go north on Oakwood. The Henry Ford is 2.5 miles from the exit on the corner of Village Rd and Oakwood Blvd.
From the South via I-75:
Exit to northbound Southfield Freeway (M-39), drive 4.1 miles to Oakwood Boulevard (Exit 4). Left on Oakwood and drive 1.8 miles.
From the North via Southfield Road (or I-96):
Take Southfield Freeway (M-39) South 4.5 miles past I-96 and exit at Michigan avenue (Exit 6). Continue on the Southfield service drive (veer left) for .5 miles. At the first stop light, turn right onto Village Road (through the iron gates) and drive 3/4 miles.
